Carmen’s Runners Eilish Flanagan set a new Northern Ireland record in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase in the early hours of this morning at the Tokyo Olympics.
Debuting at the Olympics at 2:10am this morning, Eilish Flanagan, coached by Damon Martin, ran a steady race in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, which included a few extra hurdles, as she expertly side stepped a couple of competitors who took a tumble, before tucking in beside Poland’s Alicja Konieczek.
Battling the heat and humidity of a warm Tokyo morning (10:10am Tokyo time) Eilish beat her own previous record of 9:40.68 by an impressive 6 seconds, setting a new time of 9:34.86 to finish in 12th place in Heat 3.
Her time does not qualify her through to the semi-finals, but showed her talent and is definitely a time to be proud of.
